Kuala Lumpur, Wednesday ( 17 October 2018 ) : Sustainable Energy Development Authority (SEDA) Malaysia today signed three (3) memorandums of understanding (MoUs) with Asian Development Bank (ADB), the Japanese Business Alliance for Smart Energy Worldwide (JASE-W) and APX Inc at the 9th International Greentech & Eco Products Exhibition & Conference Malaysia (IGEM) 2018. These signings were witnessed by YB Yeo Bee Yin, Minister of Energy, Science, Technology, Environment and Climate Change (MESTECC) during the opening of the IGEM 2018.
1. MoU with Asian Development Bank:
SEDA Malaysia is a statutory body established under the SEDA Act 2011 to implement the feed-in tariff (FiT) which is mandated under the Renewable Energy Act 2011. As part of its role to chart the pathway towards a future of sustainable energy, SEDA has been tasked to develop the Renewable Energy Transition Roadmap (RETR) 2035. The roadmap is anticipated to complete by end of 2019. Through this MoU, ADB will provide three (3) energy experts for a comprehensive peer-review of the roadmap; these experts include a Senior Energy Economist, a Senior Power Systems and Distribution Expert, and a Senior Energy Policy Expert. ADB will also disseminate the key highlights of the roadmap through knowledge briefs and workshops once the roadmap is completed.
2. MoU with the Japanese Business Alliance for Smart Energy Worldwide
The MoU with JASE-W will enable both Parties to exchange the information on energy efficiency programme opportunities in Malaysia. Japan is one of the leading countries emphasising on the development of Zero Energy Building (ZEB). Through this MoU information on energy efficiency knowledge, services and technologies will drive dissemination and promotion of ZEB, and ZEB concept in Malaysia. The Parties will also cooperate to provide facilitation on potential business opportunities and partnership-based projects where the Japanese knowledge and services for energy conservation and efficiency will benefit Malaysia’s industries. JASE-W is appointed by the Ministry of Economic, Trade and Investment, Japan (METI) to provide dissemination and promotion of ZEB, and ZEB series concept in Japan and ASEAN countries.
3. MoU with APX Inc
The signing of MoU between SEDA and APX Inc recognizes SEDA as an authorized verifier or a Qualified Reporting Entity (QRE) for the TIGRs Registry and is the first entity to be appointed in Malaysia. The TIGRs Registry (“Tradable Instrument for Global Renewables Registry”), operated by APX Inc, will provide a platform for trading of renewable energy certificate (REC). A REC represents all environmental attributes of 1 MWh of renewable energy generated. The RECs market will help scale up domestic renewable energy market and concurrently enable international and domestic brands to access clean energy, in line with global targets and reporting criteria set by CDP, RE100, and all other major sustainability reporting platforms.
