PUTRAJAYA: Malaysians have been encouraged to play their part in reducing carbon emissions by using more energy-efficient products.
Energy and Natural Resources Minister Datuk Dr Shamsul Anuar Nasarah said on Thursday (Jan 7) that the country can potentially reduce carbon emissions by about 40,000 tonnes a year through the government’s “Sustainability Achieved via Energy Efficiency” (Save 2.0) programme.
“The Save 2.0 incentive programme aims to encourage consumers to practice energy efficient practices while contributing to energy consumption savings and lower electricity bills.
“About 150,000 households in the country are expected to benefit from this programme.
“The government is also aiming for about RM22.26mil worth of energy savings as well as to reduce 39,164 tonnes of carbon emissions per year.
“This also translates to 56,340 trees that need to be planted for 10 years to absorb that amount of carbon.
“So, by taking part in this programme, you are playing your part in reducing carbon emissions, ” said Shamsul Anuar at a press conference after launching the programme at his ministry here.
The Save 2.0 programme was approved during Budget 2021 with an allocation of RM30mil.
Shamsul Anuar explained that the programme provides a RM200 e-rebate to households purchasing air conditioners or refrigerators with a minimum 4-star energy efficiency rating by the Energy Commission.
“The appliances must be manufactured locally or have obtained Sirim certification in Malaysia.
“This rebate is limited to one account only for every purchase of air conditioner or refrigerator in 2021 or until the quota runs out, whichever comes first.
“Only Malaysian citizens who are owners of domestic tariff electricity accounts registered with utility companies (TNB, SESB, SEB and NUR Power) are eligible to apply, ” said Shamsul Anuar.
One way users can apply and obtain the e-rebate is by bringing their latest electricity bills and making purchases physically at electrical shops registered under the Save 2.0 programme.
This can be done starting Thursday.
Another method is through online purchases, and the e-rebate application via Shopee Malaysia, which has been available since Jan 1.
A list of brands and models of energy efficient electrical equipment under the programme can be found by visiting the official website at www.saveenergy.gov.my or through the microsite provided on the e-commerce platform.
Users can also find eligibility criteria and learn how to apply for e-rebate on the website.
Shamsul Anuar also advised users to refer to the recommended purchase price list on the website to make price comparisons.
