Renewable Energy Transition Roadmap completed by next year

KUCHING April 10 (Bernama) -- A mandate has been given to Sustainable Energy Development Authority (SEDA) Malaysia to develop a Renewable Energy Transition Roadmap (RETR) which should be completed by next year, said Deputy Minister in Prime Minister's Office Datuk Seri S. Devamany.

Devamany, who is also acting Deputy Energy, Green Technology and Water Minister, said the roadmap would guide the country towards its energy transition to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.

He said by the end of January this year, SEDA has approved an investment of RM11.2 biliion under the Feed-I Tariff (FiT) scheme and these projects are expected to create 27,000 jobs.

"As at end of January 2018, a cumulative total of 12,190 FiT applications are approved with the total renewable energy capacity of 1,636 megawatt, of which 534 megawatt has achieved commercial operation," he said at the launching of the fourth International Sustainable Energy Summit (ISES) 2018 by Sarawak Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg here today.

He also highlighted that Malaysia is a global pioneer in the green sukuk, a syariah-compliant socially responsible investment (SRI) instrument.

During the summit, three Memorandums of Understanding (Mou) were signed - between SEDA Malaysia and Sarawak Proactive Training Centre (PLP) on human capital development cooperation such as providing basic and competency training programmes for local engineers and technicians in the field of Solar Photovoltaic (PV) technology in Sarawak.

Another MoU is between Petra Energy Berhad and Pekat Teknologi Sdn Bhd on a strategic partnership to have a greater exploration in the renewable energy industry.

The third MOU was signed between Cypark REstore Sdn Bhd and Tesvolt GmbH on the development of energy storage projects in Malaysia.

The two-day summit will include an exhibition, business matching session and gala dinner hosted by the Sarawak government.
